Every month, Launch Forth likes to highlight an engineer from the past or present who has contributed to furthering innovation in their respective field. This month, we're shining our spotlight on a man who is known for his efficient and radical aircraft designs: Burt Rutan.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Burt Rutan was fascinated with aircrafts and aeronautical design ever since he was a teenager. After receiving a degree in aeronautical engineering from the California State Polytechnic University, Rutan founded the Rutan Aircraft Factory in 1974 to design and build aircrafts for different companies and individuals. His designs were not only known for their use of quality materials, but also for their unusual appearance.
After gaining a reputation for his exquisite aircraft designs, he started another company in 1982 called Scaled Composites which aimed to create research aircrafts. During this endeavor, he was able to fabricate SpaceShipOne. This aircraft went on to break the civilian altitude record, cruising at a height of 40 miles above Earth.
Rutan is also known for his work in creating the GlobalFlyer. This specific aircraft has been lauded as the first aircraft to make a solo, unrefueled flight around Earth.
How can you take Burt Rutan's accomplishments and use them for motivation on your current projects?
