In celebration of #NationalAviationHistoryMonth, concurring with our current Rapid Ideation Challenge, we explore the possibility of re-designing the airplane seat.
While it was common for airplane seats pitching 31 - 33 inches, most airlines have less than that today! Budget airlines apparently have seat pitching of only 28 inches!
The way newer seats are being built seems to be a problem. The seats are built for sitting upright, but not really for trying to sleep.
Yes, there are challenges to passenger comfort, but there are also challenges to passenger safety. According to the FAA, passengers must be able to exit a plane within 90 seconds even with some exits blocked. However, all of these tests were dictated by pitches with 31 inches.
How can we make airplane seats more comfortable without making it bigger?
