When looking back on human evolution, many anthropologists tie the adoption of farming techniques to the true beginning of “civilization.” It says a lot about a species to take an interest in farming. It requires a major shift from the hunting and gathering mindset. Farming shows that your group plans on staying there for a while. It requires forethought and planning and patience. Successful farming requires a keen familiarity with the environment. When it comes to Mars, setting up farming will need to be one of our first tasks. We could bring vacuum-sealed astronaut ice cream and packaged goods but that can only last for so long. Our goal is create a community for 1 million people to live and thrive on Mars. And that will require farming and sustainable food production. This project will focus on several different aspects of farming and cultivation on Mars.
