Brief for Mars Valley Urbanization Concept Challenge

Submission Period will be open until 9am PST October 17th, 2017! Get your designs in!

Sometime, in the not too distant future, one million humans will be living in the Mars Valley (Mawrth Vallis) on planet Mars. Our mission is to conceptualize and then design the urban areas supporting these future martians; the homes, buildings, shelters, school buses, bicycles, cars, public transportation systems, ski resorts, shopping malls, and more. Inspired by your visions and designs, humankind will accelerate the colonization of Mars and the urbanization of Mars’s first city.

We are looking for designs that solve Mars’s future Transportation and Infrastructure needs and participants can choose either path, or design for both! Our first Design Challenge is focused only on concepts, meaning that we are looking for ideas, diagrams, and sketches. These do not have to be fully rendered ideas (that will come later). We want your best thinking first.

The Infrastructure Ask

With one million human on Mars, we need to be prepared to accommodate them. Your challenge is to develop the concepts for the structures, systems, smart cities and habitats that will support human life on Mars. Your design can range from a simple, yet scalable home to vast underground networks. The only limitations you have in design are physical constraints of the Red Planet.

The Transportation Ask

There is no life without movement. Transportation comes in many forms and serves different purposes in society. We need your vision to create all of the transportation modes and systems that will make humans thrive on Mars. Moving humans, delivering cargo, and even recreational transportation needs to be made. Climb on board to help design the transportation that is going to propel us into the new world.

All submissions must:

  • Be bound by the physical constraints of Mars, including Mars gravity, soil, terrain, air, cosmic radiation, need of water supply, etc.
  • Be able to sustain the environmental conditions of the Mars Valley (Mawrth Vallis).
  • Propose a solution that supports a productive life on Mars inhabited by 1 million Martians.
  • Support and excel Human life on Mars

Assumptions:

  • We are building an urban area for one million people on Mars. It is safe to say that we have already figured out a way to transport most of these people onto the planet from Earth.
  • We can supply or build with most known materials, though integrating systems that utilize materials found on Mars is always ideal.
  • Missions establishing survival have already occurred. We are now working on how to thrive.
Upcoming Challenges

HP Mars Home Planet will be running a series of Challenges - Concept | August 2017 - Modeling | November 2017 - Rendering | February 2018- building up to our final co-created VR Experience in August 2018. Join one or join all three! We are all a team as we move into our new civilization together!
