Brief for Mars Home Planet Rendering Challenge

The goal of this project is community-based design of a utopian urban society on Mars for one million humans, in 3D.Now the Mars Home Planet Concept Challenge and Mars Home Planet 3D Modeling Challenge are over, we’re on to the next stage – the Rendering Challenge. Think about a cool or innovative design in your area of interest or expertise, and bring it to life with your favorite rendering software on an HP Z Workstation. For this challenge, the following are recommended but not required to enter: Autodesk ArnoldChaos Group’s V-RayEpic Games’ Unreal Studio, and HP Z Workstations.Either render from your own designs or reference the finalists entries of the previous two challenges- the Mars Home Planet Concept Challenge and Mars Home Planet 3D Modeling Challenge– which attracted over 800 amazing submissions. Render a still, animation or VR/Real-time executable in one of two classes – Architecture/Civil Engineering or Vehicles/Mechanical Engineering.The rules are: respect the physics of Mars, use your imagination, and have fun! See the Requirements for complete details. Don’t be intimidated, as you don’t need to go at this alone. It’s easy to form a team with your friends, colleagues or schoolmates. You can even form a virtual team with anyone, anywhere, from the Launch Forth community.Membership has its privileges! Requirements for Mars Home Planet Rendering Challenge

Requirements

Architecture/Civil Engineering

  • Still rendering (GPU rendered) :JPG (minimum 2000 pixels on the longest edge)
  • Still rendering (CPU rendered) :JPG (minimum 2000 pixels on the longest edge)
  • Animated rendering (GPU rendered) :MP4 (minimum Full HD – 1920 x 1080)
  • Animated rendering (CPU rendered) :MP4 (minimum Full HD – 1920 x 1080)
  • VR or Real Time executable (GPU only) :MP4 (minimum Full HD – 1920 x 1080). Submissions must be sent in MP4 format. Use a software like Camtasia or other screen recording software to record the interface and navigation of any real-time scenes, VR/AR experiences or installations. All projects must use video to showcase the use of the technology in use.

  • Use the TAGGING function when editing your entry to signify which Renderer you used (Arnold, V-Ray)
  • Use the TAGGING function when editing your entry to signify which award category you are submitting a design for

Guidelines

  • Must be bound by the physical constraints of Mars, including Mars atmospheric conditions, gravity, soil, terrain, air, cosmic radiation, need of water supply, etc.
  • Must support a productive life and happy existence for one million humans
  • Must not use registered trademarks (for example: company names and brand logos) without explicit permission from the trademark owner is not allowed. Submissions containing such trademarks will be removed and disqualified.
  • Must tag the appropriate award category
  • Must reference the Renderer used


Assumptions:

  • We don’t know the exact date when one million people will be living on Mars
  • By the time one million humans are living on Mars, there will be a solution for efficient Earth to Mars transportation.
  • There will always be a high cost of transporting goods and resources to Mars, so consider leveraging native Martian resources for manufacturing and construction.
