UPDATE: VALIDATION TIMELINE EXTENDEDIf you submit your entry by 23:59 EST on Sunday, Feb 11th, you will now have one week to make revisions! At the Marine Corps Twentynine Palms base in California, a team of Marines has turned a fleet of standard off-the-shelf utility vehicles into highly customized vehicles that can now serve a wide range of diverse tasks. They employed ingenuity to transform stock vehicles into a multitude of use cases, embodying the grit, creativity, and technical proficiency that define the Marines.Inspired by these Marines, our community will design a new modular vehicle system that meets a range of logistical missions. This Modular Logistics Vehicle (MLV) will exemplify the innovative-hacker spirit of the Marines, turning it into something available to the entire Marine Corps.Start your entry today and show us what you think a modular vehicle should look like.Design BriefIn this Challenge, we are asking you to design a new type of light vehicle with modular elements that will allow for the vehicle to meet at least the four use-cases listed below.The design should meet these 5 design principles.  
  1. Modular - Interoperability is all that matters

  3. Understandable - Intuitive for users of all types to use, modify and share functional builds
  4. Function over Form - Fewer format features maximizing usability over aesthetics
  5. High Capacity - Room to hold more. More people, more equipment, more functions.
See the handbook for more detailThe design should fit within the following dimensions, allowing it to be easily transported by V22 Osprey.ObjectiveThe objective of this concept challenge is to give Marines operating “behind the wire” (within the confines of a base) improved functionality and experience while conducting operations. This new vehicle will incorporate modular adjustments to improve the Marine experience and their corresponding operations. New modules could be designed and customized on-base as new needs and use cases become discovered.  Four initial proposed Use Cases are as follows: (NOTE: None of these use cases are in combat. Requirements

Requirements are elements of an Entry that MUST be accounted for in a submission. If an entry does not address these details satisfactorily, the entry will be marked Invalid.

Maximum vehicle dimensions:

Overall Height: 72” (182.88 cm)

Overall Length: 141” (358.14 cm)

Overall Width: 64” (162.56 cm)

Max Curb Weight: 2000 lbs (907.2 kg)

Gross Vehicle Weight: 3500 - 4000 lbs (1587.6 - 1814.4 kg)

Minimum Ground Clearance: 10” (25.4)

Use cases:

Proposed solution should enable at least 2 of the 4 use cases described in the challenge brief. 

Guidelines

Guidelines are conceptual directions that should guide your proposed solutions. Judging will specifically be considering these elements in addition to requirements and the overarching objective statement. While these may include items that do not need to be specifically met, they express attributes that will serve to highlight the truly exceptional entries.

If you propose a change to existing vehicle infrastructure, keep in mind that cost and time are important factors. Your solutions can be inspirational, but should be realistic and compatible with existing roadway infrastructure.

Judging Criteria

Entries will be evaluated based on compliance with Requirements as well as upon a combination of the following:

  • Completeness of the Entry;

  • Adherence to Entry Guidelines;

  • Feasibility of your proposed solution;

  • Estimated implementation and production costs; and

  • Proposed solutions ease of use and simplicity.

Deliverables

Document Deliverables

Entries should be in PDF report format and contain the following information:

  • A summary describing your proposed solution;

  • A detailed description of your proposed solution, including any supporting drawings and dimensions for at least two of the four proposed Use Cases;

  • A description of your inspiration.

  • A brief description of you (or your Team’s) experience, background and capabilities, including relevant past projects and experiences.  If your Entry is submitted on behalf of a Team, each Team member should be named individually in the description.

Visual Deliverables

  • Annotated imagery of concept (JPEG or PNG of at least 1920x1080)

  • Visualization of Use Cases for at least 2 different use cases

Additional Deliverable Considerations

The list below are suggestions for your Entry. While these are not requirements, and some submissions may not need all these elements, a more complete Entry will be judged more favorably. This will enable for faster scale modeling and more as we move into a future Technical Challenge and proof-of-concepting work:

  • Full CAD drawings with assemblies, sub-assemblies and files for any mechanical designs.

  • Complete material specifications.
