You may design a manual, power assisted, or powered device. Your product design must address at least two (2) of the use cases provided within the challenge brief.
Accomplish basic needs such as:
go in a straight line, go around corners, go over bumps in the road, pass over small cracks and road indentations without becoming stuck
Must include major component(s) suitable for high performance metal additive manufacturing
Components for metal additive manufacturing should justify manufacturing by additive methods and satisfy design requirements.
(E.g, total product weight is reduced when this part is generatively designed, traditional manufacturing methods cannot be used effectively, the part fails frequently and needs to be replaced or adjusted; the part should best be tailor made to fit the customer, to provide more functionality like modularity, etc.)
Ability to adjust position of drive controls or similar on powered device
Ability to adjust arm, leg, foot support height if applicable
Be able to transfer in and out easily - both self transfer or assisted transfer.
An easy transfer is defined by: no tools required, a method or modality for moving or removing or folding components for transfer e.g.: lifting armrest, removing side guards, and easy use of transfer boards or functional equivalent if needed.
Must be able to go through a common household door frame 32" (81 cm) wide
3” (7.5 cm) minimum ground clearance
Modular components/adaptable for special needs or use cases - though the device will be primarily a manual device you may design a electric modular add-on component.
Provisions for computer assisted steering and stabilization (e.g. gyroscope)
Lighting systems for design or function
Smartphone, tablet, and adaptive peripherals interfaces
Storage solutions (backpacks with arms, autonomous trailers)
Common bathroom door width: A standard bathroom door is 32” (81 cm) this can come down to 24” (61 cm) as an absolute minimum
Common Sedan trunk size dimensions: 12 - 15 cubic ft (0.34 - 0.42 m3 )
Common shopping aisle size width: 36” (91 cm)
Common shopping counter height: 36” (91 cm)
Common table height: 30” (76 cm)
Common bar height: 42” (107 cm)– 45” (114 cm)
Components include: Seat, footrest and armrests and wheels
Your product design base does not need to follow the components within a current wheelchair but you must include modular add-ons of these components for the users who want/need them. Examples of this include: choosing to design your lifestyle device with a saddle seat.
Weight capacity: up to 350 lbs / 160 kg weight
Individual Components: no more than 55 lbs / 25 kg - goal weight would be less than 33 lbs / 15 kg
Manual (or electric assist): device can be no more than 60 lbs / 27 kg
Power: device can be no more than 250 lbs / 113 kg not including battery
Entries must be in English, in PDF report format, no more than 20 pages and should contain the following information and elements:
Executive summary: a brief description (500 words) of the proposed solution.
Detailed description of the proposed solution, including:
Key specifications (such as weight, height, width, battery life if applicable, etc.) and significant design elements that are integral to the efficacy of your entry
Drawings, including identification of major design dimensions and significant design elements (such as modular components or power components)
Description of how your proposed solution works
The 2 use cases your solution addresses, including how you chose these use cases, how your solution is adapted to address the use cases, and the efficacy of your solution for each of the use cases
An analysis of how your solution will yield accessibility to a wide variety of individuals
Materials specifications and process recommendations for significant parts that are integral to your entry (such as the metal part(s) you specify as being additively manufactured) - remember you can always reach out to co-pilots with questions.
Specialized technologies or materials that are important for your device
The inspiration for your work
Your experience, background and capabilities (and your Team's, where relevant) including relevant past projects and experiences, and the name of each team member
If the solution involves software content, the pseudo-code should be provided. (This can be counted outside the 20-page limit)
Visual File Deliverables:
Annotated imagery (JPEG or PNG of at least 1920x1080) in isometric ("perspective") and third-angle (top, side, and plan) views for:
Full assembly and all subassemblies
Illustrations showing at least 2 use cases
CAD files for complete solution assembly and all sub-assemblies in both native and neutral formats (.step and/or .stp file extensions) -- see “Resources” below for links to free CAD software and tutorials!
Materials specifications and process recommendations for significant parts that are integral to the efficacy of your entry (such as the part(s) you specify as being additively manufactured)
Additional deliverable recommendations: While not required, a more detailed entry will be judged more favorably when it comes to scale modeling, proof-of-concepting, and prototyping:
Circuit diagrams and specifications for any electronic components
Bill of materials, vendor examples, other useful references.
